Pool, sea and spa care

Spray tan, swimming and hot-tub aftercare

Do not swim, use a hot tub or let the developing tan get wet before the exact first rinse. After that rinse, water is possible, but chlorine, salt, heat, soaking, towelling and repeated swimming can shorten wear. Plan the appointment before the water-heavy part of a holiday or weekend, rinse as instructed, pat dry and moisturise regularly.

Development comes first

Keep the tan completely dry before the first rinse

The hours between application and the first rinse are not normal aftercare. The guide colour and tanning ingredients are still developing, so splashes, rain, sweat, damp swimwear and water running down the skin can create marks. Avoid swimming pools, the sea, a hot tub, sauna, steam room, hard exercise and long contact with water.

Follow the exact rinse time given at the appointment. A standard solution may use an 8-10 hour example window and a rapid option may use 2-4 hours, but the product-specific instruction is the one that matters. Do not rinse early to fit an unexpected swim, and do not leave a rapid solution on longer because you hope it will become darker.

If swimming is the main purpose of a holiday or spa break, arrange the tan early enough to complete the instructed rinse before travel and the first water session.

After the first rinse

Chlorine and salt water can shorten wear

Once the first rinse is complete, swimming does not instantly erase every tan. However, repeated exposure to pool chemicals, sea water, showering and towel friction can make colour fade faster. Hands, feet and the face may change sooner because they experience more water and washing.

Use a comfortable shower after swimming, avoid aggressive scrubbing and pat rather than rub with the towel. Apply moisturiser when the skin is clean and dry. If you are swimming every day, expect the result to need more aftercare and possibly wear for less time than it would during a dry week at home.

Water-resistant sunscreen is still essential where appropriate. A spray tan is cosmetic and does not provide reliable protection from ultraviolet exposure. Reapply sunscreen according to its directions and use shade and protective clothing.

Heat plus soaking

Why hot tubs are particularly demanding

A hot tub combines warm water, chemicals, long soaking and rubbing against seats or swimwear. That combination can accelerate fading and make high-friction areas change first. A sauna or steam room adds heat and perspiration, which can also be hard on the result.

If keeping the tan even for a particular dinner or photograph matters, schedule the hot tub afterwards where possible. If the spa is the centre of the weekend, decide whether a tan is still worthwhile knowing the colour may wear more quickly. Honest planning is better than promising that aftercare can prevent every effect of soaking.

Reduce avoidable fading

A practical water-day routine

  • Complete the instructed first rinse before swimming.
  • Use suitable sunscreen; the tan itself is not sun protection.
  • Rinse pool or sea residue from the skin without harsh scrubbing.
  • Pat dry instead of rubbing vigorously.
  • Moisturise clean, dry skin regularly.
  • Avoid exfoliating products until you are ready for the colour to fade.

Skin, preparation, product, rinse timing and activity all affect wear, so no routine guarantees a fixed number of days. The aim is a more even fade and fewer avoidable patches.

Quick answers

Swimming and hot-tub questions

Can I swim before my first spray tan rinse?

No. Keep the developing tan dry until the exact first-rinse time Francesca gives you.

Will chlorine remove a spray tan?

Chlorine and repeated swimming can shorten wear and contribute to uneven fading, although the effect varies.

Is a hot tub harder on a spray tan than a quick swim?

Heat, soaking, chemicals and friction together can accelerate fading, so hot tubs are particularly demanding on colour.

Does a spray tan protect skin from the sun?

No. Cosmetic spray tan colour does not provide reliable sun protection.
