The day before
How to prepare for a first spray tan
Exfoliate in advance so dry surface skin is not competing with the application. Complete shaving or other hair removal before appointment day where practical, giving the skin time to settle. On the day, arrive without moisturiser, body oil, perfume or deodorant on the areas being sprayed because these products can form a barrier.
Tell Francesca about allergies, sensitive skin, sunburn, open cuts, recent skin treatments or another concern before the appointment. A spray tan is cosmetic rather than medical treatment. If you are unsure whether a skin condition or treatment makes tanning suitable, obtain advice from an appropriate healthcare professional first.
Exfoliate in advance
Use gentle preparation and pay attention to drier areas such as elbows, knees and ankles.
Finish hair removal early
Avoid leaving shaving or waxing until immediately before the appointment.
Keep skin product-free
Skip moisturiser, oils, perfume and deodorant immediately before the application.
Share your plans
Give the occasion date, preferred depth and the time available for the first rinse.
At your home
What happens during the appointment
Francesca brings the pop-up tent, spray tan equipment and the products for the service booked. You need a warm, private area with clear floor space for the tent and a plug socket nearby if required. The setup keeps the application contained and gives you privacy without travelling home after the tan.
Before spraying begins, you discuss what the colour is for, when it needs to look its best and how natural or deep you want it to feel. Francesca explains the simple standing positions used to reach arms, legs and sides evenly. Most standard appointments take around 30 minutes including setup and the colour conversation, although a custom service can take a different amount of time.
You do not need to know tanning terminology. Describe the finished feel you want and the date it is for. Francesca can translate that into an appointment plan and a clear rinse instruction.
Reduce rubbing
What to wear during and after your first tan
Wear whatever coverage makes you comfortable during the application, bearing in mind that clothing creates tan lines. Have loose, dark clothing ready for afterwards. A relaxed top, loose trousers or a roomy dress and loose footwear are usually easier on developing colour than tight leggings, fitted waistbands, restrictive straps or closed shoes that rub.
Avoid planning exercise, swimming, rain exposure or another activity that creates moisture and friction before the first rinse. If you need to sleep in the guide colour, choose loose nightwear and follow the exact timing advice given for your solution. Read the dedicated what to wear after a spray tan guide for warm-weather, winter and bedtime options.
Follow the product used
Your first rinse and the finished colour
The first shower removes the cosmetic guide colour; development can continue afterwards. A standard solution may use an 8-10 hour example window and a rapid option may use 2-4 hours, but those are not interchangeable rules. Follow Francesca's appointment-specific instruction for the exact product and finish chosen.
Use lukewarm water for the first rinse and avoid scrubbing. Pat rather than rub the skin dry, then moisturise regularly once advised. The final depth and wear vary with skin, preparation, solution, rinse timing and aftercare, so no responsible appointment promises one identical result for every person.
A cosmetic tan does not provide reliable sun protection. Continue to follow current NHS sunscreen and sun-safety guidance outdoors.
Quick answers
First spray tan questions
What happens at a first spray tan appointment?
Francesca sets up a professional pop-up tent at your home, talks through the finish and timing, explains positions during the application and gives the exact first-rinse and aftercare instruction for the solution used.
What should I wear for my first spray tan?
Arrive in or bring loose, dark clothing and loose footwear for afterwards. Avoid tight waistbands, fitted leggings, restrictive straps and clothing that may rub while the tan develops.
How long should I leave a spray tan before rinsing?
The correct rinse time depends on the solution selected. A standard example may be 8-10 hours and a rapid option 2-4 hours, but always follow the appointment-specific instruction Francesca gives you.
Can I ask for a natural-looking first spray tan?
Yes. Explain that this is your first tan, what it is for and how subtle or deep you want the finish to feel. Francesca will talk through a suitable Sienna X option without promising one fixed result for every skin type.
